Give-A-way Duck Hunt Report and Pictures
Jordan Harris 10 years old from Opelika, Alabama won AWAs Waterfowl Heritage Days (WHD) Give-A-way Duck Hunt for him and a companion to hunt at Caney Creek Farm, LLC near North Sauty Waterfowl Refuge in Jackson County. Jordan is the son of Mr. Ron Harris 18-years of service with the ADCNRs Marine Police Division. Also, AWA allowed Mr. Harris to take his 13-year-old son Will along also, for a daylong duck
The morning started off with a missed opportunity at the Ed Hembree Wildlife Management Area near Mud Creek WMA, on a mallard, however the ponds were froze and ducks were very hard to work. At about 8:15 we decided that this would be a good time to eat breakfast and let the water thaw before heading back for an afternoon hunt at Caney Creek Farm. After breakfast we toured some Jackson County waterfowl habitat, that included Mud Creek Retreat Farm, and the youth and disadvantaged sportsmen hunting area at the Phillips Wildlife Demonstration Area located between Mud Creeks Green tree Reservoir and the Skyline/ James Martin WMA in Jackson County.
The water thawed at 12 noon and we jumped several mallards on the way to our pit blind. The duck flew all evening working in close for some good shots for the boys. Will and Jordan made several good clean kills using loads of Hevi-Shot donated for the youth participants in WHD hunts . As shooting time closed we had a nice brace of ducks consisting of six green heads, 2 widgeons, and 5 gadwalls. Jordan said, this is the best hunt of my lifetime and thanks to all that sponsored the Waterfowl Heritage Days and the give-a-way hunts and to Lacey (the Lab that made some excellent retrieves, with no one having to leave the blind to retrieve a duck). I will say that I have never met or hunting with finer people than Mr. Harris and two sons.
