Corn and grain sorghum is now available for planting of wildlife plots. The cost
covers shipping, storage, and handling. This is a fraction of the retail cost
for these variety of seeds. This Conservation Habitat Seed Program has
planted over 250,000 acres of land in Alabama and millions of acres nationwide. This
is left over seed from last years crop. Germination is comparable to this year's new
seed.
- Mead Paper Donates 3,000 Trees to AWA for Phillips Wildlife
Demonstration Area
- AWA is planting 6,000 oak trees on the Phillips Wildlife Demonstration Area thanks to
the Mead Paper Company. The Phillips Wildlife Demonstration Area (located in Jackson
County) will connect Mud Creek Wildlife Management Area to the Skyline /Martin Wildlife
Management Area. This endeavor will help ensure habitat for all wildlife and a wildlife
corridor for deer and turkey movement. AWA has completed most of the
tree-planting phase of this restoration project. This property was purchased from a
$250,000 grant from TVA as a water quality enhancement project; as part of TVA's
Environmental Initiative Program. AWA is two-thirds complete with restoration work.
After all the restoration work is finished, AWA will donate this 80 acre tract to
the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife and
Fresh Water Fisheries for a Wildlife Management Area. Kim Pilarski, TVA's Project
Manager for the Phillips WDA and a wetland biologist for TVA stated, " I
am pleased with the progress of the Phillips site".
- TVA / AWA Work
- Hand in Hand (Again)
- In the past year, AWA and TVA have worked hand in hand on two joint venture projects to
build and erect wood duck nesting boxes in the Tennessee River Valley. Last spring,
50 boxes were placed in the Lower Flint River area in a TVA/ AWA joint venture. This
spring North Jackson High School and Brewer High School are constructing approximately 300
wood duck nesting boxes for TVA / AWA. Additionally, there will be several blue bird
nesting boxes built during this venture. AWA will receive 100 of the wood duck
boxes.
- Arkansas Waterfowl Federation Kicks Things Off!
- Beginning this spring there will be a new waterfowl organization working to do good
things for the ducks. Arkansas Waterfowl Federation has been founded and has hit the
ground running in and around the Jonesboro, AR area. Jerry Davis, Scott Harned and
Roy Sanderson from AWA met with this organization and were instrumental in AWF getting off
the ground. AWA has played a key role in this new organization's NAWF beginnings, in
that we are sponsoring these guys for membership into North American Waterfowl Federation.
- Kids in Waterfowling And Conservation
- Alabama Waterfowl has kicked off a new program to get kids interested in waterfowling
and conservation. The name of the program, under the direction of Mike Crawford, is
KWAC (Kids in Waterfowling and Conservation). This program is open to all kids, boys
and girls, under the age of 16. Some of the activities planned are to put up wood
duck boxes on and around the Big Spring Creek Waterfowl Management Area, a duck calling
seminar (featuring former State Duck Calling Champion Cary Sadler) and much, much more.
So kids let your moms and dads know that you want to be a part of this new and
exciting program at AWA.
