This will be North Alabamas newest waterfowl management area and this project was acquired and restored in a joint venture with TVA for wetlands restoration, water quality enhancement, and wildlife preservation. This project will feature a blind for the physically challenged and will be open free to the public handicapped waterfowl hunters this coming regular waterfowl hunting season. AWA is one of the few, if not the only, conservation organization that has actually acquired the land, designed, engineered, and constructed a waterfowl project that will be opened for limited hunting to public youths and handicapped waterfowlers.

Waterfowl Heritage Days
Wanted: Alabama Waterfowl Hunters
Alabama Waterfowlers are encouraged to help celebrate Waterfowl Heritage Days during Thanksgiving weekend by introducing newcomers to and involving family members in waterfowl hunting and the waterfowling tradition and heritage. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Alabama Waterfowl Association, Alabama Wildlife Federation, and Delta Waterfowl are coordinating Waterfowl Heritage Days youth hunts in four regions across the state. Waterfowlers are encouraged to participate by assisting with four major planned events or by hosting a local event of their own. Major sponsors include Mossy Oak and Avery Outdoors. Other STEP OUTSIDE partners will be invited to join as well.
Each participating youth will be entered into a drawing for a December 2001, 4-day Waterfowl Dream Hunt in Stuttgart, Arkansas - compliments of Avery Outdoors. Four youth, one from each of four regions in the state, will be randomly selected for the Dream Hunt and will get the chance to take along the adult of their choice to Stuttgart.
The purpose of STEP OUTSIDE events is to welcome newcomers to traditional outdoor activities. By combining introductory lessons with fun in a non-intimidating atmosphere, these events can generate new interest in and support for hunting, fishing, target shooting, archery, and a variety of great outdoor pursuits.
"Scheduling and promoting these hunts during a holiday weekend will allow families to STEP OUTSIDE together," said Conservation Commissioner Riley Boykin Smith. "We would like to see dozens of experienced hunters sharing their rich outdoor heritage with their children and friends."
In planning the hunts, we welcome and need volunteers to help stage and sponsor events, and we encourage hunters to share their knowledge with novices. To sign up as a volunteer, to offer a host site, or for more information, contact the Information and Education Section of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at 1-800-262-3151.
