MAY 2005 AWA NEWS RELEASE
Dear AWA members
Frost Waterfowl will deliver 3,000 mallards to Caney Creek Farm in Scottsboro May 4, 2005 and AWA set banding and pickup day Saturday May 7, 2005 starting at 8 AM. It will be up to anyone getting ducks to bring their own transporting means for the ducks. National Band and Tags has delivered all band orders and AWA is inviting anyone that wants to participate to help in the banding project.
AWA donated and signed over the Phillips Tract to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) March 12, 2005. This is a $400,000 plus project that you, the members are turning over to the public land use program and waterfowl management projects managed by the ADCNR.
Members be aware this property now is under the rules and management of ADCNR so check all regulations before using this property now.
In 1999 AWA spearheaded the proposal and CEO Jerry Davis negotiated the land transaction that purchased the Phillip Wildlife Tract at Mud Creek. AWA developed this property as a waterfowl hunting area for youth and the physically challenged waterfowlers. This tract tied in the Mud Creek Wildlife Management Area to the Jim Martin/Skyline Management Area with only Jackson County Road 42 separating the two WMA's This proposal won a $250,000 Environmental Initiative Grant with TVA and enabled the purchase and development by AWA of the Phillips Tract. The proposal included a water quality enhancement on Mud Creek Watershed which is on the 303d list as a polluted stream. This is a water quality project as well as critical wildlife habitat.
Please inform AWA of any address changes and go to the AWA website http://www.alabamawaterfowl.org
and sign up for the email newsletter.
AWA would like to invite you in lieu of this year's membership fee to make a donation to the Mallard Restoration Project (MRP). AWA is not charging anyone for a membership for 2005, but is asking you to feel free to contribute to the MRP.
The Conservation Seed Program is still planting kilo-acres of wildlife habitat in our state. Dean Farm Supply in Hollywood, Alabama is handling seeds. Corn and sorghum seed will be available soon. Check with Dean Farm Supply for your seed and fertilizer needs; Phone 256 574-1112.
Sincerely,
Jerry Davis
